Volvo Ocean Race: Blake's Steinlager 2 enters the Volvo OR Legends

One of the most important and famous boats of all time, the Farr-designed maxi-ketch Steinlager 2, which, with legendary Kiwi skipper Sir Peter Blake in charge, won all six legs of the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race (the forerunner of the Volvo Ocean Race) will be in Alicante later this year to race in the Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta and Reunion.

Now restored to her original colours and still racing under her original sail number KZ-2, Steinlager 2 will make the voyage across the Atlantic from Antigua in time to join in the festival that is the Volvo Ocean Race Legends. Racing against her from the same era will be Rothmans, originally skippered by Englishman Lawrie Smith, and Charles Jourdan, whose skipper was Frenchman, Alain Gabbay.

'I couldn’t be happier,' said Legends ambassador, Lady Pippa Blake, whose late husband Peter competed in the Whitbread five times. 'I hope that as many of Peter’s crew as possible will come to the Legends and relive the past. The event will be an exciting and fun time and seeing Steinlager 2 racing with the fleet will be quite something. It will be a huge spectacle,' she added.

Steinlager 2 was bought by Giorgio Falck, the Italian skipper of Gatorade, which competed in the same race. She was repainted blue and named Safilo after her Italian eyewear sponsor. She continued to be a winning boat until Falck sold her to Serge Vassard from Belgium. Once again, she was repainted and renamed Barracuda.

On 24 January 2003, a group of ‘idealists’ from the Yacht Club del Mare in Lugano, Switzerland, chartered the boat for the Les Voiles de Saint Tropez regatta and fell in love with her when sailing her back to Rome. 'The yacht was in poor condition, but even so, her fascination was unbeatable,' explains current owner Stefan Detjen. 'During the delivery, we decided to save her from a sad end.'

'When we started the restoration, we soon learned that a one-off big ketch needs particular knowledge and a lot of money. With every new bill, the initial group of 10 co-owners reduced. The first enthusiasm was soon over, and then the hard work started,' he explains. Now it is just Stefan and his wife Regina left caring for Big Red, and there is still a plan to take her back home to New Zealand where her life first begun.

Steinlager 2 is currently lying at Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua, where she is being prepared for an Atlantic crossing back to Europe. A lot of money was invested to bring her back to her former glory, including a complete refit, a new paint job, new engine and new rigging. She has already completed six Atlantic crossings with a current crew that treat her like the Holy Grail, and, according to Stefan, love her more than any other boat.

Bringing the boat to the Legends means a lot to him. 'I feel that this symbol of yachting and good old legend days must be treated with respect and we want to offer a bigger circle of interested people the chance to have a look at one of the most victorious yachts from the days of the big racing ketches,' he says.

Volvo Ocean Race: Big gains for two boats in Doldrums *Feature by Richard Gladwell/Sail-World.com/nz
Two boats have made big gains in the Doldrums, with the western-most competitors apparently not stopping and sailing though the convergence zone between northern and southern hemispheres, without dropping below 8kts. Team Brunel and Abh Dhabi Ocean Racing have both made big gains on the rest of the fleet - and the two easternmost boats - Team Vestas Wind and Mapfre, in particular. ... [more]

The 2014 RS:X Youth Worlds kicked off on October 20th in Clearwater, USA, and it was hard work from the start: in 5-6 kt of breeze, offshore to start the day and side-on to close it, pumping was in order for the 54 boys and 28 girls gathered here for the 2014 RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships. ... While the Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup always offers opportunities for young people to have new experiences, coping with Hurricane Gonzalo offered the 14 competitors traveling from overseas to Bermuda a hurdle that strengthened their respect for this island nation. Many of the 14 competitors spent layover time in either hotels or airports and some are now guests in homes without electricity. ... [more]

Dynamic Stability Systems welcomes last week’s decision by IMOCA to place no further restrictions on its class rule. Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. It’s the place where the northern and southern winds meet, where a sailing race can be won or lost in an instant. And with its complex and confusing conditions, lack of breeze, and stifling heat – it’s also a place that most sailors can’t wait to see the back of. But there is one good thing about the Doldrums. ... [more]

The Atlantic has proved to be a test for the VO65s in the Volvo Ocean Race and their teams as a battle of gybing down the west coast of Africa broke out, keeping all boats in a relatively tight-knit pack for much longer than expected. It’s the dawn of a complicated day in the Volvo Ocean Race. Let’s face it: we’re not having a very good time on Dongfeng. We lost distance last night, and our leading position. The day got dull afterwards. Sailing straight ahead, with the spinnaker up, in light winds. ... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, Day 10 onboard Team SCA. Two days, eight hours, thirty-four minutes, and ten seconds, nine seconds, eight, seven, six, five… over the last few days the clock has gotten louder and louder as it counts down to October 23rd at noon—the time when we cross the equator and the time when myself and six other sailors join the rest of our crew in King Neptune’s court. ... For Pablo Arrarte Elorza, the Volvo Ocean Race is a tough challenge. Not as far as physical effort is concerned because this likeable Spaniard is a very strong guy. Last week the Volvo Ocean Race was all about VMG downwind sailing, with Dongfeng being the star performer.
