Garda Optimist Meeting 2011 a spectacular regatta

'Garda Optimist Meeting 2011'    Giovanni De Sandre

29th Garda Optimist Meeting was hosted by Fraglia Vela Riva during Easter week, April 21 to 24, and was a huge success for the young sailors involved.

In the Cadet category (9 to 11 years – 214 competitors) first place went Gronblom from Finland, second place to Bergstrom from Sweden and an excellent third place for Guido Gallinaro from Riva.

In the Juniors Nogay Dokmeci of Turkey took first place, only one point ahead of Thomasson of Sweden. The Italian Maria Vittoria Marchesini was placed third.

Everyone at Fraglia Vela Riva is very happy with the outcome of, what is probably, the most demanding event of the season with a maximum number of races completed. Ten for the juniors and eight for the cadets. The weather conditions were excellent with beautiful weather and optimal winds – keeping in mind the category – the on-water operational staff were on hand not to have the youngest cadets race in difficult conditions, instead letting the juniors race in the more technically demanding winds (in fact the juniors raced almost every day with 16 knot winds).

In the Cadet category Italian and Fraglia Vela Riva’s own Guido Gallinaro wasn’t able to hold onto his lead from yesterday. In today’s two final legs Lucas Bergstrom took control, but no one could have foreseen the excellent performance of Gronblom of Finland, who with two seconds soared into the lead two points ahead of Gallinaro and Bergstrom, who finished third and second respectively with equal points. Good showing for Luca Penini (Fraglia Vela Malcesine), who finished fourth, and Andrea Spagnolli (another local athlete from Fraglia Vela Riva) in sixth place.

In the Junior category the final was more than a bit unusual where many of the top contenders reached very high positions which were then discarded. Nogay Dokmeci (Tur 763) of Turkey, managed to hold onto his lead (despite two very bad races today). He took first place, only one point ahead of Thomasson of Sweden, always one of the leaders since the beginning. Italian Maria Vittoria Marchesini (SV Barcola Grignano) made a wonderful recovery climbing from sixth place into third. The top ten contenders had very few points separating them which could have resulted in a big change in the classification. However, the only big change was in third place. Maria Vittoria Marchesini breezed in and took the podium from Matteo Pincherle, who had been lying in third place since yesterday. Matteo Pilati of Italy made a good recovery and finished in fifth place just behind Monika Mikkola of Finland. Matteo Pincherle dropped from third to sixth place and seventh place went to Mattia Duchi, Fraglia Vela Riva. it was certainly a hard -fought final with many Italians finishing in the top ten.

Garda Optimist Meeting 2011 -  Giovanni De Sandre

This event was able to combine in its five days… gamesmanship, competition and tourism and will, no doubt, remain an unforgettable experience for all the youngsters their parents and coaches. At Fraglia Vela Riva everyone pulled out all the stops to make the event run as smoothly as possible; the older kids of the competitive teams helped the younger ones pull their carts, and several members and directors gave a helping hand where it was needed. There were 855 registered, 160 accredited coaches and rubber dinghies, parents, brothers, sisters and relatives all to accommodate, but once again Fraglia Vela Riva was up to the task in making this event a success, in spite of the numbers and the difficulties that they can sometimes create.

We have barely finished this edition that we are already looking ahead to the next, which will be an important milestone when we celebrate the 30th edition.
