ISAF Sailing World Cup Overall Standings.
After three regattas in the ISAF Sailing World Cup series the world’s best sailors are leading the way in the Overall Standings.
Dorian van Rijsselberge (NED) and Marina Alabau (ESP) lead the ISAF Sailing World Cup Men’s and Women’s RS:X Standings after winning gold at the Rolex Miami OCR and Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia Mapfre.
Van Rijsselberge won six out of 11 races in Palma to clinch gold over Tom Ashley (NZL) by a comfortable 18 points. The Dutchman, on 40 points, leads Nick Dempsey (GBR), on 37 points, in the Standings after the British sailor finished third in Palma.
For the equally impressive Alabau, consistency was the key as she finished in the top three in nine of 11 races in Palma. Her victory margin of 17 points over Charline Picon (FRA) gave her a well deserved second gold medal this season and with 40 points in the Standings she has a good lead over Picon, on 36, and Laura Linares (ITA) on 35.
In the Laser, Nick Thompson (GBR) has sailed in all three of the ISAF Sailing World Cup 2010-11 regattas. He won gold at Sail Melbourne, came fourth at the Rolex Miami OCR and picked up a bronze medal in Palma. He tops the Standings on 55 points to lead Javier Hernandez, who has also competed in all three but has been less impressive with 41 points to his name.
Just two points separated Thompson, Paul Goodison (GBR) and Tom Slingsby (AUS) heading into the Medal Race in Palma. But it was Goodison that came through in front ahead of his rivals. Goodison is third in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Laser Standings on 38 points and Slingsby is in fourth on 37 points.
Come the end of the ISAF Sailing World Cup series it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the Finn Standings.
Ben Ainslie (GBR) and Giles Scott (GBR) have been dominating the class with the pair sharing the spoils in all three of the regattas this season. But it is Ainslie who is top at the moment, on 59 points compared to Scott’s 57 points. Zach Railey (USA) trails in the pair in third place on 45 points.
Penny Clark and Katrina Hughes (GBR) have jumped to the top of the Women’s 470 Standings after a fourth place finish in Palma. They finished second at the Rolex Miami OCR to give them a cumulative points total of 36.
Behind the British girls are Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol (ITA). The Italians finished seventh in Palma and sixth in Miami. They have 29 points and are level with Camille Lecointre and Mathilde Geron (FRA) who came ninth in Palma.
The Men’s 470 ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings look a little different with Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page (AUS), 2009-2010 Men’s 470 ISAF Sailing World Cup Champions, on track to claim a second title.
With 53 points they have commanding lead over Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos (FRA) and Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell (GBR) who both have 36 points.
Men’s 470 gold medallists at the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia Mapfre, Nicolas Charbonnier and Jeremie Mion (FRA) are down in 11th after only competing in Palma.
Marit Bouwmeester (NED) is yet to win an ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta but she tops the Laser Radial Standings on 49 points. Evi Van Acker (BEL) and Paige Railey (USA) are joint second on 37 points with Sara Winther, gold medal winner in Palma, fourth on 36 points.
In the Star Standings, Andrew Campbell and Ian Coleman (USA) have closed the gap on leaders Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada (BRA). The Americans finished sixth in Palma compared to the Brazilians eighth place finish, and they bring the deficit down to just three points.
Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson (GBR) won the gold medal at the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia Mapfre, but they did not compete at the Rolex Miami OCR and with no Star sailing at Sail Melbourne they are seventh overall in the Star Standings.
Erik Storck and Trevor Moore (USA) had a disappointing regatta in Palma, they finished 16th to claim five points towards their score in the 49er ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings. Fortunately it was enough for them to remain in the lead as they have a slender advantage of one point over Nico Delle-Karth and Nikolaus Resch (AUT).
The Austrians came third at the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia Mapfre, they claimed gold at Sail Melbourne but did not compete at the Rolex Miami OCR. They have 38 points
Emmanuel Dyen and Stephane Christids (FRA) won gold in Palma, but having only competed in one out of a possible three regattas in the ISAF Sailing World Cup series they are down in seventh.
There was no Women’s Match Racing at Sail Melbourne so the latest ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings consist of the results from the Rolex Miami OCR and the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia Mapfre.
Sally Barkow (USA) has jumped into the lead after defeating Silja Lehtinen (FIN) 3-1 in the Final in Palma. She has a one point lead over Anna Tunnicliffe (USA) and Claire Leroy (FRA) who both have 37 points.
The ISAF Sailing World Cup now heads to Hyeres, France for the The Semaine Olympique Francaise, the fourth of seven regattas on the ISAF Sailing World Cup series. And with an equally impressive field set to head to the south of France it should make for yet another great week of ISAF Sailing World Cup competition.
