Frensham Pond Lark Open

A force 3 wind greeted the entrants to Frensham Pond Lark Open which was shared with the Phantom class. The race officer started the races on schedule and managed clean starts for all races.

Race 1 began with the Hydons, and Shurrocks crossing up the first beat. It was the Hydons who squeezed around first and put in a gybe going left down the next run. Shurrocks chanced the right which was at odds with other FPSC competitors Nigel Hufton and Chris Ellis who both followed the Hydons. By the end of the leg Stuart and Nick Hydon had opened up a lead that was to prove decisive in the outcome of the race. The battle for second, third and fourth ensured. It was Hufton that was able to emerge and secure a comfortable second, followed by Chris Ellis and Andy Shurrocks.

After lunch break in the clubhouse Race 2 was effectively a repeat of race 1 with the Hydons rounding first but this time followed by Fiona Gray and Adam Owens. Hydon managed to steer low on the second leg which again allowed him to open up a lead. This was followed by a good second beat which allowed Hydon to open a huge lead. Meanwhile Hufton was able to slip past Gray. Hufton held second with, Ellis, Shurrocks and Gray chasing the next places.

Race 3 saw the tightest racing of the day with place changing throughout as the tricky Frensham conditions played their part. It began with Dan Watson and Harri Condi establishing what seemed to be a reasonable lead with Chris Ellis second and Chris Biglin third. During the second lap a big wind change reversed the top five places. Hufton showed determination after rounding last at the first mark to gradually pull through the fleet and secure a win. This was followed by the Shurrocks and Chris Ellis.

After an excellent day’s racing the fleet retired to the clubhouse where prizegiving took place and an enormous feast of a complimentary afternoon tea was served to all competitors.

Thanks to Frensham Pond SC who always put 100% into the event and making everyone very welcome indeed. The race management was again first class complimented by excellent club facilities. The Larks are sure to return next year.

Results:

1 Stuart and Nick Hydon Shustoke SC
2 Nigel Hufton and Andy Douglas Frensham Pond SC
3 Chris Ellis and Ed Smith Frensham Pond SC
