North Sails enjoys a great relationship with the Young 88 class, which is New Zealand’s strongest one design keelboat class. Many North Sails staff sail with the fleet year after year, and North Sails customers carrying the new 2011 sails will benefit from a great deal of research undertaken by the One Design team.
Abracadabra, Raging Hormones, Dangerzone, Panama Jack, Men at work, Undercover, Skitzo, Medium Dry and Heartlight are some of the boats carrying various new generation sails.
The 2011 edition mainsail has a radial head to match its radial clew, which will better hold loads, and improved finishing details. Most boats are using 2:1 halyards, so the headpoint on mainsails has been shifted back. The sail is constructed from high quality Dacrons with as Contender Polykote in the cross section body, with HTP Square in the Radial section. All mainsails are now supplied with superior RBS battens, and the window size has been increased to give the skipper greater visibility in close quarters racing.
Findings from across the sailing classes have been injected into the class headsails to give faster acceleration out of manoeuvres and at the startline. Key changes include added entry to the 1 and 2 genoa, with a raised clew giving more flexibility, and the pitch black sails are made from 3DL, in a blend of 70% carbon and 30% Technora sailcloth with an additional Technora 'X-ply'.
'For the 1 genoa this allows for easier moding changes. You don’t have to adjust the jib car as much, we have found it more user friendly for tight racing,' says Andrew Wills.
But the biggest changes have occurred in the 2, which has gone through a full redesign: added entry, and a much higher clew that allows in-hauling, enabling the sail to be used in a greater range of conditions.
'This is because of the new weight limit, where these sails will get used down the range a bit,' says Andrew.
Spinnakers remain the same successful design as last season, where boats carrying North Sails were proven to have a significant downwind speed advantage.
