Once a fanatic, always a fanatic! Sailors will do whatever they can to get to a regatta on time and the Farr 30 Australian Championship is no exception.
Leon Thomas from Townsville was the last to enter the regatta, and the last to arrive, however at least he made this entrance memorable!
Thomas, with his Farr 30 Guilty Pleasures III in tow, battled rain, hail, storms and flash flooding on what was considered to be the toughest race of his regatta so far - and official racing hasn't even started!
Nervous about tucking into Roadhouse catering due to crew weight restrictions in the Farr 30 class, Thomas said he was glad to finally arrive at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, some 1,396km south of his home town.
Google Maps says that Townsville to Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron should only take 16 hours and 17 minutes along the Bruce Highway route, however it took Guilty Pleasure III over 48 hours to arrive.
A Channel 7 helicopter news crew captured Guilty Pleasures III as she made her way down the highway. Her bulb is full immersed in the flood waters that covered the road.
'We are so glad to have GPIII in real water,' said an exhausted Thomas after finally launching his boat into Manly Harbour. 'We really hope that we sail faster then we tow!'
The crew are staying at the Manly Marina Cove motel located on the grounds of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for the duration of the regatta.
The Farr 30 Australian Championship kicks off tomorrow, Friday 1 April, with race organisers hoping to complete three or four races on the first day. Racing will be conducted on both Waterloo Bay (sheltered) and Moreton Bay areas off the Brisbane bayside suburb or Manly.
Chris Tyquin and his GOA/Nova 106.9 crew go into the regatta as favourites after winning the Farr 30 Queensland Championship last weekend.
GOA/Nova 106.9, Synergy and Guilty Pleasures III have all successfully weighed in and are ready to race. The other crews can be seen running around the grounds of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in wet weather gear.
