Cadet Victorian Championship competitors battle changing conditions

Geelong’s Corio Bay was whipped up with wild weather today for the Cadet fleet competing in the International Cadet Victorian Championship.

The fleet were sent out shortly after lunch in bright warm sunshine and light patchy airs, which was predicted to build as the sea breeze approached. Crews were enjoying the warmth after spending the morning swimming in the marina to keep cool.

How conditions can change quickly. A line of 18-20 knot breeze from the south east surprised some crews who struggled to upturn the capsized boats in the choppy waves. Dark clouds came in, then the rain and squalling wind.

Racing commenced with most crews choosing the boat end to start. Coming off two bullets yesterday the Sasson brothers, Anton and Julian (Samaran) came into the top mark a boat length ahead of local Jessica Case and Emily Goodfellow (Assassin). This however quickly changed as Assassin overtook Samaran before the hitch mark to keep her lead to take line honours.

The first spinnaker run was very testing for the cadet fleet, with many capsizing and struggling in the conditions. RGYC Cadet Captain Emma Woods (Starlight Express) suffered rudder issues and became one of the many retirements of the race.

After race 3 was completed, racing was abandoned for the rest of the day. With fantastic support from volunteers in rescue boats, all crews returned to shore safely.

Racing continues tomorrow.
