Sail-World.com : Mirabaud rides out the storm

Mirabaud rides out the storm

'Jusry rig is the next target for Wavre and Paret on Mirabaud - Barcelona World Race'    Barcelona World Race ©

Barcelona World Race competitor Mirabaud is under engine as Dominique Wavre and Michèle Paret ride out the worst of a storm which dismasted them. The storm should pass over them in the next few hours.

Though the mast broke near the top, above the third set of spreaders, it seems that in the end they were unable to stabilise the broken section which after time took away some of the lower spreaders and so turned the whole lot into a dangerous, twisted mess.

In the end it was decided by the skippers to bring the mast down in a more controlled fashion as best they could. This procedure accounted for some broken stanchions but otherwise the boat itself is largely undamaged.

The duo have been successful in saving the boom which will be used to set a jury rig as and when the weather and their energies allow. Then they would expect to sail towards Argentina.

They have been in regular touch with Marcel Van Trieste who has advised them of the more favourable route to pass the storm in as best conditions as possible while taking into account their probable course to Argentina.

According to reports the morale of the duo remains positive. According to shore manager Magali Paret who is in contact with them all the time, they have been focused entirely on making the boat safe and have not had time to consider what has happened to them. Michèle Paret who is still recovering from an anaemic condition is taking full part in the procedures. They were making a course of 250 degrees.

Virbac-Paprec 3 are now 1085 miles to the equator this morning with a lead of 345 miles over MAPFRE, racing in light NE’ly winds. MAPFRE are making the same kinds of speed, 11-13kts, but have slowed slightly but will be expecting the breeze to head them more today. So Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez have made a further 17 miles back against Jean-Pierre Dick and Loïck Peyron overnight but their gains are likely to have evened out now.

In third Renault Z.E Sailing Team are still upwind making a nice course NE on the edge of the strongest breeze, in 25-28kts of N’ly wind but Pachi Rivero and Toño Piris should be able to break through to the more favourable conditions of the new system later today.

From Neutrogena to Estrella Damm the lateral NW-SE separation is now 60 miles but there is just 15.6 miles between in terms of distance to finish. They had an awkward transition around the 0400hrs ranking this morning, but should be through into faster reaching breezes soon.

GAES Centros Auditivos now have 90 miles of margin over Hugo Boss this morning with a notable divergence of courses. Dee Caffari and Anna Corbella have opted to go west of the Falklands and Hugo Boss look to be routing east. GAES Centros Auditivos look to have reaching winds of around 30-35kts.

FMC are making good easterly progress in the strong W’ly airstream as do We Are Water who are 2003 miles behind.
