Barcelona World Race - Half way there? Or half way home? Or not?

Barcelona World Race - It's a theoretical distance, but 25,000 miles is the published course distance. And this evening Jean-Pierre Dick and Loick Peyron have 12,487.3 miles to sail to the finish. Call it half way? Well, in one theory, but bear in mind we are at day 43 and the race record is nearly 93 days. For all that the conditions are tough, speeds among the top three boats remain high, and even. Jean-Pierre Dick and Loïck Peyron are quickest, making 18.5kts between the final two rankings today to ease a few more miles off the Spanish duo who are pushing them hard. Virbac-Paprec 3 may be quickest between the rankings but MAPFRE are fastest in the final hour and have now eased 76 miles clear of Estrella Damm. The Spanish rivarly is intense, but friendly. Ribes, Martinez and Fernandez all sailed the last Volvo Ocean Race together, and in fact the two IMOCA duos did some of their final preparation together in the Atlantic out from Iker and Xabi's base in Sanxenxo in the very north of Spain. That gave Alex Pella and Pepe Ribes a passage up from Barcelona and back as training miles, and they Estrella Damm out of the water in the yard with Iker and Xabi's MAPFRE doing final preparations and checks, fitting and trying new sails out together. They have between 150 and 200 miles left of the Indian Ocean and should be in the Pacific by tomorrow. Alex Thomson will be taking some pride in the way Wouter Verbraak and Andy Meiklejohn have Hugo Boss wound up in the system, again the fastest boat in the fleet over 24 hours, making an impressive 465.8 miles and they still have another couple of days of good breeze. They have made 21 miles on seventh placed Neutrogena who are 321 miles ahead. And We Are Water are still very slow in the high, making just 15 miles between the rankings. http://www.barcelonaworldrace.org/en/
