Barcelona World Race - Fickle conditions for Caffari and Corbella

Barcelona World Race update from Gaes Centros Auditivos.
Today the all female duo aboard GAES Centros Auditivos will be fighting hard to maintain their current position in the Barcelona World Race as closest race rivals, Andy Meiklejohn & Wouter Verbraak aboard Hugo Boss, bear down on them. Creating a more comfortable distance between themselves and the black and white boat will not be made any easier with the fickle weather conditions that the GAES girls are experiencing. At the 0900hrs ranking this morning Hugo Boss where just 63 miles behind GAES Centros Auditivos so the pressure is on for Caffari and Corbella as they make their next tactical decision. How far south to they dare dip between ice gates to take advantage of the shorter distance and potential increase in speeds, knowing that they will have to head north again to clear the Amsterdam Gate?
Reporting this morning, Caffari said: 'Dawn today has brought with it changeable weather. Showers bring with them wind and then after the rain there is a lull where we sit becalmed. I think today will be a difficult day to make steady progress. We can feel the pressure of Hugo Boss breathing down our necks and just hope they have these light conditions too.'
Whilst the more northerly course the Barcelona World Race is taking, due to the presence of ice at this time of year, there is at least one benefit for the girls who enjoy very few creature comforts onboard their IMOCA Open 60.
Caffari explains: 'Sea water temperatures have been in the high teens for a few days now and we have celebrated by washing our hair. It felt great!'
Virbac-Paprec 3 leads the Barcelona World Race fleet with Mapfre and Estrella Damn sitting in second and third places respectively. At the 0900hrs ranking today, Caffari and Corbella onboard GAES Centros Auditivos were in eighth place, 63 miles ahead of Andy Meiklejohn & Wouter Verbraak on Hugo Boss.
