Warren Jones International Youth Regatta - Getting tight at the top

Warren Jones International Youth Regatta 2011.

David Gilmour is finding it crowded on the top rung of the ladder at the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta after the second day, with New Zealander Will Tiller and Sydneysider David Chapman joining him.

The overnight leader from the first day, David Gilmour, found the competition a little tougher on the second day, with those who hadn’t sailed last week’s Colin Mullins Regatta, getting used to the boats, and closing the skills gap.

Will Tiller from Auckland’s Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron put five more points on the board today, from seven races, and was one of the big improvers of the day.

As well as Chapman and Tiller having a better day, Gilmour’s performance was not as impressive as on day one, suffering three losses.

The first of these losses was a shock upset at the hands of bottom of the ladder dweller Kosaku Yoshida of Japan, with Gilmour showing his vulnerability in light airs, while his other two defeats were to Tiller and Chapman.

There are three other teams level in fourth place, joining the scramble for those hard to get semi-finals places, Sydney’s Evan Walker, winner of last week’s Colin Mullins Regatta, Kiwi Matthew Steven and Seve Jarvin another Sydneysider.

Perth turned on classic Swan River conditions, with a fickle south easterly in the morning, which was replaced by a gutsy sea breeze in the afternoon.

The Warren Jones International Youth Regatta is being hosted by the Royal Perth Yacht Club, and organised by Swan River Sailing.

Results after day two:

1= William Tiller NZL 11pts
1= David Chapman AUS 11pts
1= David Gilmour AUS 11pts
4= Evan Walker AUS 7pts
4= Matthew Steven AUS 7pts
4= Seve Jarvin AUS 7pts
7= Peter Nicholas AUS 6pts
7= Tristan Brown AUS 6pts
9 Kosaku Yoshida AUS 2pts
