Optimist (IODA) World Sailing Championships - Thai Champion

'Noppakao Poonpat - IODA World Champion'    IODA Worlds
IODA World Sailing Championships, Langkawi, Malaysia.

Noppakao Poonpat from Thailand took the bullet in the final race of the championship to become the 2010 Optimist World Champion in style.

Poonpat sailed consistently throughout the Championship, winning four races in the fifteen race series and was on course to take the title with two days to go. A near disastrous penultimate day when she posted an OCS and 16th left her fighting for survival from nearest rival Ahmad Syukri Bin Abdul Aziz (MAS) but in true champions style she kept control of the race and lead almost from the start.

Aziz secured the silver medal, nine points ahead of Okado Keiju from Japan who took the bronze. Mohd Fazal Bin Norizan came in fourth for Malaysia with Marvin Fisch from Germany completing the top five. The second girl overall was Kimberly Lim Min from Singapore who finished eighth.

231 sailors competed in Langkawi, Malaysia and the final top ten is dominated by Asian sailors. Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore are all represented in the top ten with only Fish from Germany in fifth and Odelie van Aanholt from the Netherlands Antilles in ninth interrupting their dominance.
