Gascoigne Cup 2010: Paul Clitheroe and his long-standing amateur crew on Beneteau 45 'Balance' earned the prestigious Gascoigne Cup over the weekend in Sydney after winning the historic short ocean race hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Clitheroe’s team, who competed with Ullman Sails, won the 2010 offshore windward/leeward course on corrected time under the PHS Handicap system.
Despite a thunderstorm at the start of the race, 33 boats took part in Saturday’s race. 'Balance' now stands among the some of the great yachts to win the Gascoigne Cup since its inaugural race in 1886.
'Balance' now looks ahead to this weekend’s Lord Howe Island Race – the only other category one ocean race in Australia besides the Rolex Sydney Hobart. Clitheroe will be competing in the IRC division.
