Coastguard Boating Education hosted a series of regional forums; starting in Christchurch in late August, followed by Taupo and ending in Aucklad at the beginning of September. With over 110 tutors attending, it was an opportunity to up skill and learn about the latest programme developments within the organisation.

One of the highlights was the presentation of awards in recognition of an individual's contribution to the safety of the boating public of New Zealand.

At the Christchurch forum, Wayne Middleton was presented with the Captain Mike Little Award for the South Island Tutor of Year 2010. He is a Day Skipper, VHF & GPS tutor teaching over 100 students in the last 18 months since becoming an accredited tutor. The award for Outstanding Contribution to Coastguard Boating Education was presented to Jim Lilley. Jim was accredited to teach boating education courses in 2006, now specialising in teaching SAR (Search & Rescue) courses. He is better known as his role within Maritime NZ as the South Island Small Craft Safety advisor. Steve Gibbs, as one of the most popular and respected tutors over recent years, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

The Captain Mike Little Award for the Lower North Island Tutor of Year 2010 was presented to Donna Bennett at the forum in Taupo. She is a relatively new tutor and has already taught 137 Day Skipper students since 2008, with a special interest in teaching women's only Day Skipper courses. John Riley was presented with the award for Outstanding Contribution to Coastguard Boating Education. John has taught approximately 1,000 Day Skipper, Boatmaster & VHF students since being accredited as a tutor in 1996. The Certificate of Appreciation was presented to John Weston, who has been teaching boating education since the early 70s tutoring almost 2,000 students.

At the Auckland forum, John Croft was presented with the Captain Mike Little Award for the Upper North Island Tutor of the Year 2010. He has taught over 1000 students since he began teaching for CBES 19 years ago, with the majority of his students successfully completing the Ocean Yachtmaster course. A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Michael Booth. This retiring Tutor began teaching Boatmaster in 1994, and in those 16 years he has taught over 2,500 students.

A premier award for Exceptional Contribution to Coastguard Boating Education was presented to Jim Lott. Jim taught his first safe boating course in 1967 and has been an integral part of Coastguard Boating Education since our inception in 1985. When CBES became a limited company in 1995 Jim was appointed as one of the directors remaining a valuable member to this day.

General Manager Mark Bright said that the tutor's high standards of dedication and commitment to promoting boating safety ensured that boaties were equipped with the knowledge to keep themselves and their families' safe on the water.

Coastguard Boating Education offers a range of courses from the introductory Day Skipper, Marine VHF Radio and Boatmaster to practical on the water training.
