The Idris Cup, the perpetual trophy for the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Yachtsman of the Year, has been awarded to Guy Stening in recognition of his Australian and World Championship wins in the international class now known as the Farr 30.

Commodore Bill Wood presented the prestigious Cup to Guy at the Squadron’s annual prize-giving held last Friday evening, the Commodore also handing out the many other fine trophies won by members during the 2008-2008 summer sailing season.

The Farr 30, a high performance, one design offshore racing keelboat, originally was called the Mumm 30 under a naming rights agreement between the designers Farr Yacht Design and the French champagne company, but when this arrangement ended, the class had an interim name of M30 until recently re-named the Farr 30.

Guy Stening has been a driving force behind the class in Australia and has matched this with success on the race track nationally and internationally with his boat called Optimumm.

Over the past two seasons he has won back-to-back Australian Championships in Sydney and in Brisbane, as well as the 2009 Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta, while overseas he has won the 2009 World Championship and the Coastal Living Newport Regatta at Newport, Rhode Island.

Among other special trophies presented by Commodore Wood was the Kopsen Trophy, revived last season for competition between the International Etchells yachts based at the RSYS and the CYCA, with the CYCA team taking out the trophy.

The most successful overall skipper during the RSYS season was undoubtedly Hamish Jarrett in the International Yngling class, and he celebrated his collection of trophies on Friday evening by skippering his 10.5m Catalina Catnapa to a line and handicap win in the Squadron Winter Series on Saturday.

Sailing his Yngling, Pourquoi, Hamish won the 2008-2009 Australian and State Championship and the RSYS Main, Spring and Scratch Series, notching up 13 scratch wins.

Catnapa won Saturday’s Division 2 Winter Series Race from TIngari (John Jeremy) and Kupa Gila (John Anstey).
