Francis Joyon sets off on solo Route Discovery
|
Francis Joyon, skipper of the maxi trimaran IDEC triggered the stopwatch off Cadiz (Spain) at 05 hours 30 minutes and 57 seconds GMT (or 06 hours 30 minutes and 57 seconds - European time) on Tuesday 28 October 2008. To claim the record around the world alone he will have to cross the finish line by 07 November to 17 hours 20 minutes and 43 seconds (TU) to register a new name at the top of the record for the Route Discovery which takes the route of Christopher Columbus in 1492. To beat this record, Francis Joyon must cross the finish line in the Bahamas before November 7 at 18 hours 20 minutes and 43 seconds (CET). It is obviously much too early to talk about chances of success. 'If everything goes well, I will be in 24 hours in the Canary approach,' he felt this morning, knowing that there is a door he must meet in Gran Canaria, since the Route Discovery takes the route of Christopher Columbus in 1492. 'At 13h42, IDEC was hitting to 27.5 knots, heading 220, by 34 degrees north latitude and 8 ° 09 west longitude. The maxi trimaran was at 3,725 miles purpose and had already swallowed about 130 miles from the direct route.
