Cockerill on form at Rooster 8.1 UK Nationals

Steve Cockerill, not content with winning almost every single hander championship going, took the next step and produced as well as starred in the Rooster 8.1 UK Nationals held at Weston Sailing Club last weekend.

Cockerill likes to get involved and has built a formidable chandlery and sailing equipment business, while still finding time to compete on the dinghy championship circuit.

Not content with winning in other people´s classes, he re-rigged the ubiquitous Laser, called it the 8.1 and started own class. And over the weekend of the 18 - 19 October he successfully defend the UK championship.

The idea of the 8.1 is to provide more power for the larger helm on the Laser hull. Steve was able to show that despite the increase in sail area, with the right rig set-up, he - normally a Radial sailor - was able to stay with and beat the heavier guys the rig was designed for in 20 knots of breeze.

In a reversal of what might have been expected Cockerill was in third place after three races on the first day. Greg Carey from Royal Lymington Sailing Club was the overall leader, followed by Ian Morgan. Carey won the first race from Cockerill and Morgan. Race two went to Morgan with Cockerill second and Carey third. Carey took the final race of the day with Simon Barrington second and Alister Glenn third.

With the wind increasing on Sunday to 20 knots it was looking a heavyweights day, but Cockerill, using his full cunningham, no kicker set-up, sailed to three wins - claiming, 'I had no weather helm and it was easier to sail than a Laser Radial!'

In race 4, Morgan took second ahead of Barrington, while Carey set some sort of record by breaking his seventh boom this season! Race five of the series and Cockerill had an easy win with Barrington second and Andy Gordon third.

In the final race it was Barrington duelling with Cockerill and losing, with Neil Peters getting his best result of the weekend with a third place.

Chris Fyans had learned from the max-cunningham system and also posted his best result, taking a fifth. Jenn Botterill was a fantastic sixth in this race still sailing with a smile on her face!

Cockerill's last three race wins added to his two second places on the first day to take the title again from an improving Simon Barrington and Ian Morgan. Commiseration's to Greg Carey for his gear failure as he would certainly have finished in the chocolates. First Lady went to Kerry Tucker who once again showed the versatility of this rig finishing, sixth overall and never outside the top nine.
