Desafio triumphs on Quebramar GP42 Cup circuit
|
The Spanish team Desafío wins three legs of the international Quebramar GP42 Cup circuit and gets the overall title, their key being consistency. Fifteen points on the Italians on Airis, leaders in Saint Tropez and Lanzarote. Franch/Swiss on Near Miss climb on the third step of the podium while sistership Roma GP42.2 are fourth overall. There was a somber sky on Lanzarote this morning, charged of rain and tension. The rain finally came but the tension only dissolved when the GP42 eight-strong fleet crossed the starting line well later than expected, due to the light breeze on the Bravo area that forced the Committtee to keep the postponement flag flying for more than two hours. Once racing with 8-9 knots of wind, though, certainly all the sailors on the GP42s, only strive to make their absolute best because the final prize was important. On the usual windward/leeward 1.7-mile long course, the battle was on for the overall Circuit victory as for the leadership in Trofeo Cesar Manrique 2008. The race, as a matter of fact, became a match-race like battle between the two top teams, Desafio, helmed by Laureano Wizner with Santi Lopez-Vazquez calling tactics and the Italians from Felci designed Airis, helmed by Sandro Montefusco and embarking kiwi Cameron Appleton, especially for this last leg. But it was Roma GP42.2 sneaking in and grabbing the last 2008 circuit race. With today's race, then, the international Quebramar GP42 Cup 2008 circuit came to a conclusion: six events always marked by close and exciting racing, by top sailors, by varying sailing, wind and weather conditions that allowed the crew's abilities to get to the spotlight. Great satisfaction for the Class Managements also comes form the fact of seeing a podium with three different nationalities (Spain, Italy and Switzerland), boats from different designers (Botin, Felci and Farr), as a reminder that the circuit is really cosmopolitan. Desafio's consistency clearly paid as did the wish to win by the Italians on Airis, who won two legs and were always main actors, and determination of the crew sailing for Geneva-based owner Franck Noël.
