Kiel Week 2009 switches for New ISAF circuit

'49er at Kiel Week 2008'    Kieler Woche 2008

Kieler Woche 2009, running from June 20 to June 28 has made changes to the traditional format with the introduction of the new ISAF Sailing World Cup. Reversing the normal order, the 2009 regatta will start with the Olympic boat classes and finish with the International classes in the second half of the week.

The reason for this swap of the 2009 Kieler Woche schedule is the inclusion of the newly invented ISAF Sailing World Cup, thus offering the competitors in the Olympic classes better tune-up possibilities. The new series formalises the existing traditional Olympic regattas into a full-time championship series.

'We want to contribute to the development and modern concept of the international sport of sailing within future Kieler Woche regatta events. 2009 will be the premiere of the inclusion of the ISAF World Sailing Cup into Kieler Woche, and we strive for best conditions for all competitors' commented Jobst Richter, Chairman of the Kieler Woche Race Committee.

'Consequently, we shall start Kieler Woche 2009 with the Olympic classes and add an additional tune-up day on Friday, June 19, with offering an extra practice race' continued Richter.

Thus, the Kieler Woche 2009 organisation is prepared for the arrival of several ambitious Olympic classes’ competitors from Wednesday, June 17 who will prepare and train for valuable ISAF Sailing World Cup points as well as the desirable Kieler Woche titles.

The starting gun for the first race will be fired on all race courses at 11.00 am on Saturday, June 20.

The Olympic Part of Kieler Woche 2009/ISAF World Sailing Cup will finish on Wednesday evening, June 24, after a total of five race days. From Thursday, June 25, until Sunday, June 28 the competitors of the International classes will compete and race for victory in Kieler Woche 2009.

The newly invented ISAF World Sailing Cup will be launched in Australia in December 2008 at Sail Melbourne, and continue in the US in January 2009 with the Rolex Miami Regatta before switching to Europe in April for the Princess Sofia Trophy MAPFRE in Spain.

Further events in the World Sailing Cup will be Semaine Olympique Hyères in France in April and then Medemblik, Holland in May for the Delta Lloyd Regatta, then the Kiel Regetta in Germany in June and the series will finish in Weymouth, UK in September 2009 with the Skandia Sail for Gold event.
