The new Melges 20 class made their debut on San Francisco Bay. The 20 joins the other highly successful Melges products the Melges 17, Melges 24 and Melges 32. Here in the UK it will be immediately compared with the Laser SB3 which has been the best selling small racing keelboat in the UK and is now spreading out to other markets.
Not only are they very similar in the numbers you could also get confused by the company names. The Melges 20 producion company is Melges Performance Sailboats and the Laser SB3 is from Performance Sailcraft, who have now joined with Vanguard Sailboats USA to become Laser Performance - still with us?
The first Melges 20 came out of the moulds in April and San Francisco is their first big public appearance - Erik Simonson of www.h2oshots.com was there to catch the action
