WPNSA to mark Beijing handover this Sunday

Official 2012 sailing venue, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) will be marking this Sunday, August 24th, the Beijing to London hand over with the unveiling of a new 2012 flag, given to the Academy by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. This flag can be only be flown at selected 2012 venues. Sunday will be the first time that anyone has viewed the flag and rumour is that the design incorporates the Union Jack within it.
The flag ceremony will also mark the outstanding achievement of the Skandia Team GBR in Qingdao, pulling in a record 4 gold, 1 sliver and 1 bronze. The sailing and windsurfing heroes are a key ingredient to helping the whole GBR Olympic team achieve the best medal haul for 100 years. A number of the sailing medalists, including Sarah Ayton and Bryony Shaw, live in the Weymouth and Portland region and provide a real inspiration for the community.
Mark Stubbings, commented, ‘ Raising the new 2012 official venue flag will not only mark the important Beijing hand over to London, but will also let us congratulate the whole Skandia Team GBR on their excellent results whilst remembering our past WPNSA Chairman, the inspirational Bill Ludlow’.
The Academy are now looking forward to viewing the Paralympic events where Weymouth locals Helena Lucas sponsored by Charles Russell and Alex Rickham will be competing.
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy has very different natural assets for the International sailing and windsurfing world to enjoy in 2012. The venue was originally selected to be the heart of UK sailing due to the excellent prevailing winds and ample unobstructed course area with room for development of a dinghy park.
The course area boasts a sheltered flat water area in Portland Harbour with more challenging conditions out in Weymouth Bay, all with the back drop of the stunning Jurassic coastline. WPNSA also has a strong commitment to maintaining the local natural environment demonstrated by winning a 2008 Sport Industry Award for Environmental Concern in Sport.
With final construction work due for completion in November 2008, WPNSA will be to date the first 2012 site completed 3 years ahead of schedule, an incredible success for the Olympic Development Authority.
