East Lothian YC hosted the Wilburn Homes 2008 Scottish Championships over the weekend of 16/17 August, and welcomed nine visitors from England and 'local' Scots from as far afield as Wick, St Andrews and the Clyde.
A competitive fleet of 29 Solos was treated to two days of great racing in near perfect conditions. Race officer Bill Roberts was able to set a variety of excellent open water courses in a mainly steady 17-24 knot easterly and a moderate sea.
First to show was past winner Chris Brown who threw down the gauntlet to the local helms with a hard fought win in the first race, but with Geoff Henstridge of Pentland Firth taking the second race by a nose and Kevan Gibb of Largo the third, the title race was wide open for day two.
The top 3 continued the battle for the honours on Sunday, with Richard Bolton of the home club, Derek Gibb of Largo and David Mitchell of Winsford Flash putting in a serious challenge, the latter with the most emphatic win of the weekend in Race 5.
The Wilburn Homes sponsored title was not decided until the final mark rounding of the final race. Self-styled comeback king Kevan’s late surge and third race win leaving him just 1 point adrift of Geoff’s wining total, a triumph of consistency.
The masters prize went to light-weather expert Ted Hill whilst a badly shuffled lottery draw rewarded a dozen other thirsty sailors with suitable means to celebrate.
The Solo fleet returns to North Berwick in August 2009 for its UK National Championship, hoping for a full week of the same great sailing conditions and friendly competition. Solo - Final leading results
