More than one hundred yachts from fifteen countries will start competing on the waters of the Palma bay in the Mediterranean’s most important regatta - the 27th Copa del Rey AUDI MAPFRE - which was officially opened Saturday at the Real Club Náutico de Palma by Javier Sanz, president of the organizing committee.

The boats will be distributed over three race areas in Palma’s bay. The most spectacular ones will undoubtedly be the GP42’s and TP52’s, racing in elapsed time for their season’s most important regatta. The one-design X-35 and the elegant Swan 45 will be competing in the second race area while the third one will play host to the IRC, ORC 570 and ORC 670, racing in handicapped time.

Javier Sanz welcomed all sailors and media representatives to the Copa del Rey AUDI MAPFRE, to take place from next Monday, 28 July to Saturday,3 August, on the waters of the Palma Bay. Sanz wanted thank in particular MAPFRE, new co-sponsor of the regatta, 'a loyal collaborator of the Real Club Náutico de Palma', and acknowledge AUDI’s support, 'that repeats its sponsorship with even greater illusion, horsepower and thrust'.

'High-level sailing is changing', explained the president of the organizing committee, and the, 'Copa del Rey wants to react to the new reality by opening its doors to a new model', with a clear 'emphasis on real-time racing and one-design classes', in order to make the Mediterranean’s most important regatta 'a current and modern event'.

According to Sanz, 'If last year was a year of putting an order, this year will be one of consolidation' in the nine classes that will compete, among whom it was important to note the presence of the two Telefonica VOR 70, that will be in Palma in order to participate in an exhibition race.'

On the technical side, Sanz pointed out that they decided to retain discards after the ninth race, because 'we want the Copa del Rey to remain competitive and reach the last day of racing with the score table as tight as possible. For the same reason, the three race areas will be rotating this year, in order to make 'the life of tacticians more difficult'. Finally, all classes except the GP42 will sail a coastal race off the Mallorcan coast.

Exclusive presentation of brand new AUDI Q5

Miguel Piwko, of Audi Spain, pointed out the role of the Copa del Rey as Spain’s 'most important race', and stated his company’s 'firm compromise to continue sponsoring the event next year' as it represents the values of 'sports spirit, technological innovation, teamwork and achievement'.

In addition, Miguel Piwko took advantage of the event in order to 'exclusively' present the German group’s 'new navigator', the brand new AUDI Q5, already on display on the yacht club’s terrace, 'five months before its launch in the Spanish market', so that all sailors and visitors can admire it.

Juan José Almagro, on behalf of MAPFRE, stated the insurance group he represented was honored to have become one of the Copa del Rey’s sponsors, because in that way 'we enhance our support towards the city of Palma and the sport of sailing', given the fact the Spanish insurance group is already the main sponsor of other annual races organized by the RCNP, such as the Trofeo Princesa Sofía.

Last but not least, Baldomero Oliver, of Palma’s city hall, emphasized that Palma’s bay 'is one of the best race areas in Europe', and was certain that the organization set up by the Real Club Náutico, celebrating its 60th birthday this year, was a 'guarantee for success'.

Unprecedented media coverage

The media interest generated by the event is reflected on the number of media that were on place, covering the event. Close to 400 journalists, photographers, technicians and cameramen from 10 countries have been accredited so far, from more than 50 newspapers, magazines, and radio and television networks.
