Sail-World.com : Israel and Spain lead Junior 470 Worlds on Day 2

Israel and Spain lead Junior 470 Worlds on Day 2

Race three and four were completed today, the second day of racing, at the Junior 470 World Championships for Men/Mixed and Women crews.

Lavie LIOR and Amir YAM (ISR) hold their lead in the Men’s 470, and Tara PACHECO and Berta BETAZOS (ESP) in the women’s. Racing got underway this morning in a moderate 10 to 12 knots northerly breeze and competition got fierce.
470 Men/Mixed
The Men’s 470 started in two re-assigned groups, and especially Berenger BALZEAU and Mathieu FOUNTAINE from France pushed it hard. They became the heroes of today by hitting two bullets in today’s 'Group Blue', with France’s Sofian BOUVET and Jeremie MION right on their tail, scoring a double two in the same group.

In 'Group Yellow', overnight leaders Lavie LIOR and Amir YAM (ISR) and Steven LEFEVRE and Steven KROL (NED) provided a chance for their opponents by making a tactical mistake in race three, to finish respectively seventh and ninth.

'We and the Israeli’s went to the left on our way to the upper mark, while the whole fleet went to the right, and favorable side. We reached the mark in about 25th position, but fortunately we managed to fight our way back.' Steven LEFEVRE said.

Tomasz JANUSZEWSKI and Marcin MICKIEWICZ (POL), who did not miss any medal race in Junior Championships last year, took their chances and finished second. In race four, the local heroes were not able to maintain their promising efforts and finished the race with an unlucky number (13).

Both the Israeli and Dutch did not make the same mistake and lead race four all the way, fighting for first and second place. The Dutch boys won the battle and take their second bullet in the event.

470 Women
Tension is rising in the women’s 470. Hannah MILLS and Katrina HUGHES (GBR) who were mentioned as favorites earlier, lose their overnight second place to Australia’s Stacey OMAY and Chelsea HALL. Tara PACHECO and Berta BETAZOS from Spain maintain their lead, however they have a bad start at pin-end in race three and cannot recover, to finish in 11th place. They win race four, and maintain their lead because the 'worst result' discard has become active today after four races.

Also Sweden’s Lisa ERICSON and Astrid GABRIELSSON and Annika BOCHMAN and Anika LORENZ from Germany did very well today and closed the gap to the leaders.

Both in the Men/Mixed and in the Women’s 470’s, the top ten is taken by eight nations.

Racing continues tomorrow at 11:00.

Tomorrow’s races will finally decide on the starting places in the Gold Fleet in the 470 Men/Mixed event. The final series will start on Saturday. The 470 Women will continue racing in one fleet.

Both medal races, for Men/Mixed and Women, will take place on the 29th of July.
