Normal service resumed at Solo Nationals

'Solo'    icon
Day 5 of the Solo National Championship at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club and Torbay delivered 'Big Thursday' with some awesome sailing conditions with a Force 3-4 easterly at the start of the day with huge rollers in the bay.

Normal service was resumed on the penultimate day of racing with Charlie Cumbley and Andy Davis dominating the racing and the pair finished the day over 30 points clear of the third placed Chris Goldhawk.

Dave McGregor who started the day in third after winning both races the day before, suffered more gear failure, the gooseneck this time, to pick-up two DNF and drop out of contention.

Charlie Cumbley stamped his authority on the race from the start at the pin end and was never headed as he came in from the left. Andy Davis rounded the windward mark second, followed by a mass of chasing boats.

After the first two reaches Steve Cockerill, Geoff Henstridge and Chris Goldhawk had pulled away from the chasing pack and finished in that order.

Race 9 - River Dart Cup
1 Charlie Cumbley 4858
2 Andy Davis 4857
3 Steve Cockerill 4865
4 Geoff Henstridge 4731
5 Chris Goldhawk 4501

In race 10 of the 12 race series, Ian Houston started at the committee boat end and tacked off to right hand side of the beat where he picked up a good shift which saw him with a healthy lead at the first mark.

Andy Davis and Charlie Cumbley rounded second and third having come in from the left just ahead of Steve Broom, Cliff Crawshaw, Chris Goldhawk and Steve Cockerill.

Houston couldn't match the downwind speed of Davis and Cumbley who had both overhauled him by the leeward mark.

Davis and Cumbley virtually match raced up the beat with Davis covering and maintained a good lead only to see Cumbley blast past him down the run and take a commanding lead. On the final beat Goldhawk picked up a good shift to finish just behind Cockerill but ahead of Steve Broom and Alister Morley.

Race 10 - SB Marine Trophy
1 Charlie Cumbley 4858
2 Andy Davis 4857
3 Steve Cockerill 4865
4 Chris Goldhawk 4501
5 Steve Broom 4921
