Sail-World.com : 2008 European Laser Championships - day 6

2008 European Laser Championships - day 6

The first start of the day took place on time for the Laser Standard Senior fleet with a stable wind of 15 knots. At the start of the race, the strong current proved challenging for the sailors, leading to few OCS and black flags being given. The windward mark drifted due to the strong current, but the mark layers took swift action to replace it. The first race took 87 minutes to complete due to the strong current.

At the start of the second race the wind increased to around 20 knots. The green fleet started well with just two OCS given, the red fleet had a general recall and the yellow fleet started without any problems. The wind continued to increase throughout the race to 23 knots.

There was no change in the top three sailors on the leader board today. Tom Slingsby scored a second in race 7 and another bullet in race 8 allowing him to stretch his overall lead over second place Paul Goodison to 11 points. Goodison scored a 26th and a second today but is closely followed by Vasilij Zbogar in third place overall.

Overall lead switched again in the Laser Radial Men's Championship

In the Laser Radial fleets, the first race of the day was slightly delayed due to the pin end boat not holding anchor. Once this was resolved the first race got underway with a steady westerly wind of 12 knots at the start. All fleets started well without any recalls or even an OCS being given. Throughout the race the wind increased steadily to reach 16 knots at the finish with a consistent wind direction.

After a short break for lunch, the fleet got on the water again for race eight with winds in excess of 18 knots. The wind strengthened even more throughout the race to reach up to 21 knots, challenging those sailors unfamiliar with the choppy North Sea.

In the Laser Radial Men's fleet the overall lead has switched again. Yesterday's leader, Jon Emmett, scored a 10th and a fourth today taking him down one place to second overall. Wojciech Zemke scored a first and a third today allowing him to take overall lead on 12 points, just three points ahead of Jon Emmett. Matthieu Frei (FRA) moved up to third place.
