Sail-World.com : Burns and Simpson win Largo Bay RS200 Open

Burns and Simpson win Largo Bay RS200 Open

Largo Bay played host club for the fourth Scottish traveller for the Scottish RS 200 circuit. Competitors were greeted by champagne sailing conditions on arrival with a SW 12 – 20 knots breeze oscillating 15 degrees from mean all day on Saturday, with a rolling 1/4 – 1 metre swell.

With Ronny Miller having led the way in the last 3 events, particularly in the breezier conditions, he assumed the betting man’s choice for the win. Roy McCubbin sporting the newest boat in the UK fleet was also one of those who was in contention. Robbie Burns returning to the class after having competed at 1 event so far was also a threat for the win.

Races 1, 2 and 3 proved mostly to be a 2-horse races with Burns and Miller trading places on nearly every upwind and downwind leg. Miller with far superior technique and tactical calls was lightning quick off wind, where as Burns seemed to find some extra shifts to have an advantage upwind.

The rest of the fleet enjoyed some very tight racing further back from the tussle at the front. McCubbin enjoyed 2 swims in the first race sharing the swimming duties with his crew Kirsty McSeveney to get his discard of 9th, other than this his 3rd place overall did not look in jeopardy.

Day 2 and similar conditions to Saturday, for the first race. Race 2 the breeze went lighter and shifted 40 degrees to the right. Race 3 and the breeze shifted a further 20 degrees to the right and the race team who did a good job all weekend quickly reset the course.

The 1st race of the day saw the most competitive race of the weekend with Roy and Kirsty having a good lead on the first leg. Burns and Miller had there own battle on the RHS of the track on the first beat as such the fleet were all together when they rounded the windward mark. As the race progressed both Miller and Burns managed to overhaul the rest of the fleet with Miller winning, Burns pipping McCubbin at the finish to steal 2nd.

By this stage Burns had a hole in his boat (but was unaware of it!) and letting in water at a considerable rate. This did not seem to affect the result of the next race where Burns won and Miller was 2nd and McCubbin 3rd.

Burns retired to shore for the last race leaving Miller to take the win. Newly-wed Carolyn McCaldin sailed well to finish a creditable 2nd with McCubbin again taking 3rd.

New to the fleet was John Olsen and son Hamish. They both sailed the boat very well considering they are new to fleet and showed promise for the future.

Next round is at Largs SC where it will be a UK Fat Face event, numbers are expected to be in excess of 50 boats, so this is a must do event for all RS 200 sailors in Scotland. This will be an event for those to learn from the trend setting sailors south of the border. Hope to see you all there.
