Sail-World.com : Instone and Parker are GP14 Southern Champs

Instone and Parker are GP14 Southern Champs

Richard Instone and Steve Parker from Chase SC dominated the GP14 Southern Championships at Poole YC over last weekend. Opening the series with two victories, they continued their winning ways on the second day with two more wins and then a second place in the final race to take the title. Second place went to local club members, Matt Burge and Simon Wheeler, with third place going to Andy Tunnicliffe and Adam Lees.

With a target of 45 minutes per race, the first race on Saturday was held in 5 - 16 knots of breeze with regular 90 degree wind shifts against the 10 - 12 knots northerly forecast. The eventual overall winner Richard Instone with the help of World Champion crew Steve Parker proved the simple rule for winning a race - start well - get into the lead - dont let any boats pass you until the finish - this worked for all the races he won.

The last race saw the wind lift from 5 to 16 knots and shift so that generally the fleet was over standing the windward mark after rounding the leeward mark. Winning this race left Andi Tunnicliffe of Windemere with Matt Burge of Poole second still in the running after the first day both with four points from their best two races.

On Sunday Richard Instone cemented his lead with two clear wins as the 16 to 22 knot wind speed saw many local and visiting GPers enjoy the warmer waters and soft mud of Poole harbour - wind shifts and gusts catching them unawares. The final race gave the Burge clan a first and third as Matt's father Andy crewed for Colin Rainback in Reflection. We think there was a separate competition between those two.

Ian Sinclaire and Alan Jones 'swiped' the silver fleet trophy with very consistent finishing always in the top eight. James Ward and Richard Whitehill took bronze again with consistent finishing - always in the top half of the fleet.

Many thanks to our sponsor Piplers of Poole without whose support over the years we would not have been able to host many of our events.
