Sail-World.com : Fireball Open at Lee on Solent

Fireball Open at Lee on Solent

The Fireball fleet enjoyed excellent racing at Lee-on-solent SC on the 7 - 8 June. Three back to back races were held on Saturday and Sunday. The competition was fierce with three previous world champions and the current world champions in attendance. Matt Mee and Richard Wagstaff were the eventual winners showing their consistency throughout a range of conditions.

Saturday’s racing was held in a variable 12 knots with lots of tide and large oscillations. DJ Edwards/Thompson took the first race followed by Smith/Mildred in 2nd with Grey/Forbes 3rd. Mee/Wagstaff led from start to finish in the second race, leaving the rest of the fleet fighting for places.

Race 3 was held in a real mix of conditions, this was won by Rush/Thorne followed by Mee/Wagstaff with Smith/Mildred in 3rd.

Sundays racing was sailed in lighter conditions but again with lots of tide and patchy breeze across the race course. Mee/Wagstaff took race 4 but were pushed all the way round by Edwards/Thompson who finished 2nd. Smith/Mildred posted another 3rd.

Race 5 saw Wade/McGrane take the win, Edwards/Thompson came in 2nd with Mee/Wagstaff finishing in 3rd.

By race 6 the conditions were becoming increasingly difficult to read as the breeze continued to shift and die. Smith/Mildred took the win followed by Mee/Wagstaff with Popple/Tillson taking a well deserved 3rd place.

Mee/Wagstaff were convincing winners in the end showing their consistency throughout a range of conditions. Second and 3rd was a tie on points with Edwards/Thompson finishing 2nd overall from Smith/Mildred who took 3rd.

Many thanks to Lee-on-Solent SC for holding an excellent weekends racing.
