Sail-World.com : Start of Sunday racing at Liverpool YC

Start of Sunday racing at Liverpool YC

Fantastic weather greeted the start of normal Sunday racing at Liverpool Yacht Club, after seven months because of the major overhaul to the marina lock gates on Sunday 8 June.

Ten yachts from classes 2 & 3 entered the first of the Fareastsails.com sponsored summer Series. Rod Darling and the crew of Lezayre were tasked with managing the race in sunny conditions with a F3 NW wind. The first leg of the course saw the fleet going up river with spinnakers flying. The second and third legs were a sausage beating against the tide down river before returning on a spinnaker leg back up the Garston channel.

The fourth leg required the fleet to cross over to the Eastham channel which taxed skippers’ tactical awareness of the different tidal flows, as high water was approached, as to when to leave the move favourable stream of the Garston channel for the strong foul tide mid river. The final leg re-crossed the river for the final beat back to the marina finish line.

In class 2 as is often the case Adam Kyffin and Jon Oliver’s Formula 28 lead the fleet from the first mark and took both line and class honours. For much of the race Malcolm Blair’s Hunter 707 Loose Elastic kept them honest but despite crossing the line in second were demoted to third behind Stuart Lofthouse’s Impala Skukusa.

In class 3 Jeanette and Dave Hardy’s Int. H boat Hocus Pocus took line and class honours with Richard Campbell second in his Achilles 24 Clarevouyant second and Richard Baldwin in his Superseal Tango thirds.
