British 470 girls seize the day in Medemblik

Day three of the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik saw British sailors make gains, with Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark the top British performers of the day on Friday.
Skandia Team GBR’s top 470 women’s crew have broken into the top three for the first time this week, with a run of three consecutive race wins and a second from their past four races.
Bassadone and Clark – the 2007 world bronze medallists – are just four points adrift from the Brazilian crew currently occupying the silver medal position, with the Italian team of Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol leading the pack.
British crews occupy silver medal positions in three other classes heading into the final two days of the regatta. Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes have improved their standing in the high performance 49er class, up from third overnight, with results of 11,7,3 from their three races on Thursday.
But although the 2007 world silver medallists have so far avoided the equipment problems that plagued them at the Europeans and the French Olympic Sailing Week and are in a strong position heading into the final two days, Morrison believes they’ve still got plenty left in the tank.
'At the moment we’re more Iceman and Slider, rather than Maverick and Goose!' joked Morrison, likening their performance to the characters from the 1980s Top Gun movie.
The Skandia Team GBR 49er pair are just three points off the lead, with Spanish Tellechea crew assuming the top spot, with the World Champions Nathan Outteridge and Ben Austin of Australia. The overnight leaders, Italy’s Sibello brothers are down in fourth after a tough day, but Britain’s Dave Evans and Simon Hiscocks have made it into the top ten with the help of a second from their final race of the day.
Leigh McMillan and Will Howden have held on to their second place in the Tornado fleet, although have the French pair of Xavier Revil and Christophe Espagnon snapping at their heels in third, while Ed Wright retains his silver medal position in the Finn class.
Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson continue their advance through the Yngling pack, pulling up to fourth overall. There’s just one day of racing left for the women’s keelboat class, with three more fleet races to be run prior to the medal race on Saturday evening.
Andrea Brewster is currently eighth in the Laser Radial event, with Penny Clark in tenth, while Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson are also tenth in the Star class. Nic Asher and Elliot Willis are the top British crew in 470 men’s event, in 22nd place.
