Sail-World.com : Cadwallader and Stone win FF Traveller event

Cadwallader and Stone win FF Traveller event

Llangorse Sailing Club hosted 36 Flying Fifteens over last weekend for the TNT sponsored Traveller event and annual Llangorse SC Flying 15 Open Meeting. There were 13 Open, 4 Silver & 19 Classics with 21 Visitors. A record for Llangorse.

Ian Cadwallader and Nick Stone from Chew Valley SC took the Open Fleet Trophy, with a one point win ahead of Richard Hope and Scott Smith from Draycote SC. Third were David Morgan and Lorina Walden from Llangorse SC

Conditions were not ideal and were typical of how frustrating sailing on lakes can be. Race Officer Rob Dangerfield struggled to set the course for the first race on Saturday as the wind kept coming and going and shifting around the compass. The wind was predominately from the East varying in strength for 0 to 5 Knots.

Race 1
In the Open fleet Ian Cadwallader got to the mark first followed by Simon Patterson and in the dying breeze, tis was the result to the finish which was a shortened course to everyone’s relief.

In the Classic Fleet the grand old lady of Llangorse, FF55 Jeremy and Katherine Soulsby stormed through the field not only winning the Classic race but finishing in front of a number of the Open fleet even starting five minutes after them. The Silver fleet was won by Mick Edwards and Andrew Watson followed home by David and Lynne Travis.

Race 2
Clean start in the Open fleet but as the boats approached the windward mark there was big wind shift and as expected there were winners and losers. Richard Hope and Scott Smith led and agian this was the finishing position, with Cadwallader and Stone taking second.

The Classic start was interesting in that the wind shift in the Open Fleet occurred on their start. Nick Heath controlled the race from this point and went on to win. Bob Tait worked his way back to third only to be disqualified for failing to go through the gate.

The silver fleet was won by local boy, Hank Jackson. The fleet then retired ashore for an excellent barbecue with over 85 people filling the clubhouse and grounds.

Sunday
At last some wind but still very variable in both strength and direction. In the Open fleet the main contenders reached the windward mark in close company but David Morgan and Lorina Walden managed a good lead followed by Cadwallader and Stone. These two leading boats changed position a couple of times on the beat but the winners were Morgan and Walden.

The Classic fleet was well contested with the eventual winner the local boat Colin Fletcher 2846. It was nice to see Mike Jones in 2630 finish second. Edwards and Watson 3365 won the silver.

Race 4
Going into the last race for the Open fleet, Hope and Smith needed a 1st to win the event from Cadwallader and Stone. The start was an interesting event with a degree of shouting but all got away cleanly. With a bit more wind the fleet split to both sides of the course with no clear advantage.

At the mark it was Simon Dangerfield closely chased by Hope and Smith and Morgan, and Lorina Walden. Again the two leading boats had a good battle with Hope and Smith getting to within three boat lengths at one stage before Dangerfield pulled out a gap to finish first.

The leading Classics were all carrying heavy discards so it was all down to the last race. The leading three stayed close to each other for the whole race but it was Bob Tait and Mick Musgrave who proved the winners followed by Tim Tomlinson and Mark Greer and then Nick Heath and Pip Noon.

Local couple David and Lynne Travis won the final silver race having obviously benefited from their TNT training. (It was their enthusiasms that got Llangorse on the TNT circuit).

This was the second event of the TNT Travellers and three boats showed results in both, with last year’ winner, Richard Hope, now leading the table with two good results. The circuit now moves onto Bassenthwaite.
