Percy out in tricky day for Brits at Medemblik

'Tornado - Andrew Walsh and Edward Barney (GBR)'    Delta Lloyd Regatta

British sailors held on to three podium spots after a tricky second day of racing at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik on Thursday. Skandia Team GBR Tornado team of Leigh McMillan and Will Howden improved their overall standing to second. Finn sailor Ed Wright is also currently in the silver medal position and Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes have held on to their top three spot in the 49er fleet.

Light surface winds prevailed across the Ijsselmeer and decreased throughout the course of the day, making for some tough conditions, especially for the classes scheduled to race late in the afternoon.

Enduring two abandoned races as the breeze diminished, the Skandia Team GBR Tornado team of McMillan and Howden picked up a race win and a sixth from the two races which were held for the catamaran class, to improve their overall standing to second after day two. They’re just two points off of the leading Australians Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby.

Finn sailor Ed Wright has his eye his second straight podium finish at a Grade 1 event – after scooping a silver at the French Olympic Sailing Week in Hyeres last month, he’s currently in the silver medal position in Medemblik, scoring 15, 3 from his two races on Thursday. The 30-year-old former European Champion is trailing Slovenian Gasper Vincec by three points, while Slovenian Ivan Klajkovic Gaspic is three points behind Wright in third.

Morrison and Rhodes have held on to their top three spot in the 49er fleet, tied on points with the second placed Portuguese crew of Jorge Lima and Francisco Andrade. The Italian Sibello brothers have gained a 14 points lead at the top of the table.

Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson improved their standing to fifth place in the tightly-contested Yngling fleet, which sees the second to seventh placed boats separated by just eight points.

In the men’s Star keelboat event, Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson were forced to retire from their first race of the day when they picked up two yellow flag penalties for illegal rocking of the boat. Coupled with an 11th from their second race of the day, they find themselves in 15th place overall and with some ground to make up if they’re to make the final ten-boat medal race on Sunday.

In the 470 women’s fleet, Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark finished the day on a high with a win in race six, while Skandia Team GBR’s 470 men’s World Champions Nic Asher and Elliot Willis are poised just outside of the medal race spots in 12th – the duo picked up a black flag penalty for a premature start in their first race of the day.

Andrea Brewster and Penny Clark are in 16th and 18th places respectively in the women’s single-handed Laser Radial class.

Racing at the Delta Lloyd Regatta continues through until Sunday 25 May – for more news and information, visit www.skandiateamgbr.com/events/hollandreg
