A friend was ‘surfing’ through some back numbers of Seahorse the other day – the Jan/Feb 1979 issue No 50 (price: 50p) to be precise. Seahorse we have always taken to a very right and proper and serious magazine, and the decorum and taste of the RORC is of course beyond doubt. Which is why we were delighted (sorry, that should be ‘shocked’) to be introduced to the Vectis Sailcloth ad on the centre spread of the magazine. Clearly the Solent was the place to be for sailcloth in 1979, although we suspect that the photos were not taken in Jan/Feb. ICI Terylene and Vectis are to be congratulated on a few well-placed stickers and some snappy copywriting: 'A superior range of cloths that every yachtsman can rely on, whether it’s for a solo transatlantic, or to get the wife and kids home in time for tea.' Either of these your wife? Or are they your kids? Can we come home for tea, too? Hey, they’ve even got a Queen’s Award for Export Achievement! We just never knew that sailcloth could be presented so attractively. Anyone for a roll in the half-ounce?
