RS400 Fat Face circuit event at Queen Mary
|
Paul Hilliar and Stu Jagger won the RS400 Fat Face circuit event at Queen Mary SC. Although bracingly cold, the wind was a pretty decent F3-4, shifting regularly. Twentyfive RS400s braved the forecast or snow and freezing temperatures to attend the first Fat Face circuit event of the season at Queen Mary SC. Off the start in the first race, Richard Gray/Nathan Pinch nailed the first major shift to take the lead around the first mark and then gybed off to build a considerable advantage that they would never lose. Behind them, Sam Parker/Jane Bailey had a race-long battle with Paul Hilliar/Stu Jagger, with Parker/Bailey eventually losing out to take third. After a short delay to allow frostbite to set in and the wind to settle down, the second race started and Chris Gowers/June Riley got rewarded for a risky first beat with a large lead that the fleet would never get close to challenging. Behind them, James Downer/Jon Price took second in the constantly shifting conditions from Paul Allen/Jude Pryde. The wind picked up to a nice F5 for the third race and Hilliar/Jagger showed the fleet the way around the course, pushed all the way by first race winners Gray/Pinch, with fellow strong wind specialists Gowers/Riley never far behind in third. On Sunday, sailors were left questioning their sanity as they headed for the start area having cleared three inches of snow from the boat covers. Even worse, more snow was falling over the race course! Hilliar/Jagger snuck into the lead at the first mark, chased hard by Parker/Bailey and Gray/Pinch. Parker/Bailey showed some great pace to keep the pressure on the leaders all the way around but ultimately came over the finish line just a boat length behind Hilliar/Jagger. After further delays and some more extremities lost to the cold while the second race was restarted a few times, Michael Sims/Elliot Banks led up the first beat, only to be passed by Allen/Pryde and Hilliar/Jagger. These leading two pulled away from the bunch and had a titanic battle throughout the race, with Allen/Pryde taking the winners gun. Fortunately the final race got underway without any further delays. After a massive pile-up at the port end, Carl Akesson/Eric Larsson built a lead, chased by Gowers/Riley. At the mark though, a Cowboy rounding by Allen/Pryde left them spinning and Pryde with a broken finger (she was apparently too cold to notice it though). Hilliar/Jagger took the lead, from the chasing Gowers/Riley and Stuart Hudson/Ian Sanderson. Eventually, Hilliar/Jagger won from Gowers/Riley, with Hudson/Sanderson scraping third in a three-way photo finish. Overall this left Hilliar/Jagger as event winners, with Gowers/Riley taking second on countback from Gray/Pinch.
