New leaders in 49er Europeans

'Brothers Federico and Arturo Alonso (Alfa Romeo)'    Tomeu Bibiloni /CNA

Spain's Federico and Arturo Alonso have taken the lead in the 49er Europeans – Madrid 2016 in Majorca. They were the better team of the day and took the lead from compatriots Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández who dropped down to second place after three bad results in today’s races.

There is only one point difference between the leaders and in third place are the young Austrian team Nico Kart and Nikolaus Resch, five points from the 2004 Athens gold medallists.

Lighter SW winds of 10 to 12 knots, blew today in the racing area in the Bay of Palma. The lighter wind changed the front of the fleet. Martínez and Fernández had their worst results of the event and lost a 25 point lead.

The Alonso brothers made the most of the conditions with a first and second putting them into the lead by one point. Others to prosper were Kart and Resch, who also won a race and are now five points behind in third.

Ukrainian sailors Rodion Luka and Geogiy Leonchuk also won a race and are in fourth, one point off a podium place.

Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes have finally moved into top GBR position, they are 13th, equal on points with Paul Campbell-Jones and Mark Asquith.

The top ten will be finally decided tomorrow after two more races. Only the top ten teams will sail the Medal Race on Sunday. It will be a thirty minutes race that scores double and cannot be discarded. The podium will not be decided until this last, final race is completed.
