Moths beat the Gale at Hayling Island Open
|
The 5th Anniversary Opening Handicap Race at Hayling Island SC attracted 22 hardy sailors on Sunday 9 March. First prize of Dinner for two and a bottle of wine, over night accommodation and breakfast at the club went to Mike Lennon sailing a Foiled Moth. In second place was another of the all conquering Moth species hydrofoil, that of Simon Payne, who got a dinner for two and a bottle of wine at the the club, but nowhere to sleep it off. Third was a standard Solo helmed by Bill Ingram, who gets £10 to spend at the club bar. Racing took place on Sunday and finished before the forcast Severe Gale force winds hit the south of England. By Monday morning a Force 9 gusting 10 was battering HISC, combined with a very high tide. Marine Manager, Nick Elliott reported that a few boats were blown over but on the whole the club had escaped very lightly so far! A lesson learnt would be that when tying down your boat ensure it is tied tightly, lifting the chain, and at the shrouds not just across the mast. Boats need to be tied to the chain even if they are on road trailers, not just tied to road trailer! Strong winds are expected to continue through Tuesday.
