World and Olympic champion Ben Ainslie kicked off a weekend of family fun when he raised the curtain on the 2008 RYA Dinghy Sailing Show, in association with Yachts and Yachting and Suzuki, at London¹s Alexandra Palace on Saturday 1 March.
The show is busting at the seams with events, speakers and essential kit that no dinghy sailor can afford to miss. Whether you¹re a complete novice or a seasoned professional this year¹s show is guaranteed to have something to whet your appetite.
Held at Alexandra Palace, London, 1st 2nd March, this year¹s show kicks off with Geoff Holt - BBC South Sports Personality of the Year and the first disabled sailor to sail solo around Britain, talking about his ŒPersonal Everest Challenge¹. Hear how he battled against the elements and overcame setbacks which may have deterred many and went on to reach his goal in ŒExtreme Cruising¹. Members of the RYA team will then guide you through the basics of dinghy sailing and how to make the most out of your Dinghy day out.
You¹ll also get the opportunity to mingle with the RYA¹s Beijing 2008 Olympic nominees before they head off to do battle for the medals; including the likes of dinghy sailing superstar Ben Ainslie, Laser sailor Paul Goodison and 49er skiff sailors Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes. Then hear how their preparations are going for the games in the insightful talk, ŒRoad to Beijing¹.
This unique show, dedicated solely to dinghy sailors prides itself on giving visitors the opportunity to meet and learn from experts within the world of dinghy sailing. Top instructors and coaches such as Cat racing expert Brian Phipps and renowned sailing author Grahame Forshaw provide expert advice and answer your questions.
Coaching talks this year include; Basic Rig Tuning, Laser Master class with Skandia Team GBR sailor Paul Goodison, Performance Cat Racing and ŒWinning Talk¹ letting listeners in on one of the great secrets to winning: communication.
You can also learn about the latest techniques and advice on recovering people from the water in to a safety boat, as well as the latest developments on foiling dinghies, for those of you who like your sports extreme. Just check out a stunning visual presentation on foiling dinghies from speed merchant Peter Barton. It has to be seen to be believed.
For budding boating photographer¹s wishing to get their photos on the cover of a yachting publication, Yachts and Yachting editor Gael Pawson will be providing tips on what makes a good cover shot and will be revealing the winner of the Yachts and Yachting photography competition.
Winners of the RYA Club of the Year Award will also be unveiled at the show, with awards being presented by top UK sailors Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes and winners of the RYA Coach and Instructor of the Year award will also be
crowned (16.30, Saturday 1st). The show culminates with a celebration of the RYA National Champions, with top sailors from across the classes, as well as featuring the Endeavour Trophy (16.30, Sunday 2nd).
You can really make a weekend of it, and there¹s plenty for the children to do as well. Model boat racing competitions are a hit with children of all ages and there is also a treasure hunt, face painting, colouring competition and for those with plenty of puff, the Holt Blow Boat Challenge.
This is just a taste of what¹s going on, there¹s much more on offer. Tickets cost just £10.50 for adults / £9.00 for RYA members. Kids go free on Sunday and child tickets on Saturday cost only £5.00 (5-16 years), £4.00 for child RYA members. Tickets will also be available on the door prices; adult £12.50, child £6.25.
