A cracking start was made to the LYC / PSC Renard-Systems.co.uk Brass Monkey series at Pwllheli on Sunday Jan 27th, with ten LYC yachts competing with over 65 LYC members on board.
The first Brass Monkey race of the day saw eight LYC yachts and Molissa; from PSC enjoy a splendid windward-leeward race in near perfect conditions. The breeze from the west was steady at 12 to 16 knots and in the bright wintry sunshine.
In Class 1, Richard Booth’s Another Nods set a brisk pace from the gun and was never headed, eventually finishing first, both on the water and on corrected time.
Dinamite-Tee crossed the line in front of Molissa, to be placed 3rd on corrected time, followed by Jenevieve and Daydream Believer.
Class 2 produced a very exciting race between Quattro and Musketeer, with Quattro holding off Musketeer's strong challenge. Poppy came a close third with Magic Moments fourth.
Interest in the second race of the day was added to by the appearance on the line of Mighty Max who had only arrived from Holyhead an hour or so before. The delivery crew had bashed their way through the night in very heavy seas to reach Pwllheli and in spite of being very tired joined owner Neil Thomas and relief crew.
The course confused the Mighty Max tactician as he wasn't sure where mark 8 was (hadn't been able to collect the race pack), so they followed Another Nods round the first lap and then the race really started. A fascinating contest between Mighty Max and Another Nods developed for the whole of the two hour race with Another Nods just holding off Mighty Max by a few yards at the finish line.
The winner however was Molissa who sailed a canny race and edged Another Nods and Mighty Max out by just seven seconds on corrected time.
Class 2 again produced a great contest between Quattro and Musketeer. This time Musketeer managed to get in front and hold on by a few yards after a two hour plus race with Poppy a close third.
