Sail the Farr 40 Worlds in exotic places

'Farr 40 - Enfant Terrible, Opus One'    Rolex Farr 40 Worlds
The Farr 40 Class announced the venues for the Rolex Farr 40 World Championships from 2009-2011 starting with the 2008 Worlds in Miami Beach. Then it will be off to the azure waters off Porto Cervo, Sardinia for 2009 and then in the winter of 2010 the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. To round off the circuit the class will be returning Down Under in 2011 to summer in spectacular and magical Sydney, Australia.

The 2008 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship, in Miami Beach, will run from April 16-19. Upwards of 40 boats are expected, with a solid group of Farr 40s that have been racing in southern Florida this winter, plus several new boats that are joining the class. The fleet will be based at the Miami Beach Marina. The Rolex Farr 40 Pre-Worlds will take place from April 11-12.

From June 24-27, 2009, the Farr 40 class will return to the azure waters off Porto Cervo, Sardinia. The Worlds' fleet was there in 2003, enjoying great sailing in the 25-30 knot breezes, and will again be hosted by the prestigious and sporting Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

In the winter of 2010, the class will explore an exciting new destination -- the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean - based out of the luxurious Casa de Campo resort. The newly-expanded Casa de Campo Marina & Yacht Club will play host for the World Championship.

The following winter 2011, finds the class returning Down Under to summer in spectacular and magical Sydney, Australia. The ever-keen Australian fleet continues to grow and will offer spirited competition and, as always, great sailing conditions off Sydney Heads, with the racing run by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

Class President Jim Richardson noted, 'The Executive Committee is very excited about the prospects of hosting our biggest championships in such wonderful and beautiful locations. Each should provide a setting for great racing and even more fun.'

Miami will offer up great conditions

With the 2008 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship in Miami Beach, Florida less than three months away, the Farr 40 class is anticipating a good turnout and tough competition.

Farr 40 -  Rolex Farr 40 Worlds
If last week's Acura Key West Race Week was a form guide for the Worlds in April, it will be 'all on' for this ultra-competitive class. In Key West, the 25-boat Farr 40 class included teams from around the world as well as several past world champions.

The eight-race series was hard-fought, with seven different winners over the series, including the likes of Mascalzone Latino (ITA), Mean Machine (MON), Twins (FRA), and Barking Mad (USA).

It came down to the wire in the last race, with Jim Richardson's Barking Mad winning the final race by 30 seconds over defending back-to-back World Champion Vincenzo Onorato's, Mascalzone Latino, to finish even on points -- and Barking Mad taking the win on the count back with two firsts.

Richardson, two-time World Champion (in 1998 and 2004), also won the Farr 40 10th Anniversary Regatta in November 2007. Richardson was ecstatic with his recent win, commenting,

'This was our 11th Key West Race Week. It is a very difficult regatta which I've always wanted to win. We have had some close calls and a few disasters like last year when we finished next to last. This time to go out and win the last race and win not only the regatta, but Boat of the Week as well, I couldn't be more thrilled.' He continued, 'It is going to be a great Worlds in Miami - the class continues to be well-run and it shows in the high level of skill in the fleet. It's a competitive and fun group of great sailors, and with new boats coming into the class, the racing will be top-notch.'

The Farr 40 class has regular regattas scheduled for its fleets around the world, including the 2008 North American's at Edgartown, Massachusetts on Martha's Vineyard, August 14-17 and the 2008 Rolex Europeans in Travemunde, Germany, August 26-31.

The Rolex Farr 40 World Championship is in its 11th year. The World Championship has been sailed in North America, Europe or Australia every year since the class was established in 1997. The Rolex Farr 40 World Championship joins other prestigious Rolex-sponsored 2008 events including the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Rolex Swan Cup, Rolex Big Boat Series and the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
