British teams top entries at 2008 Tornado Worlds
|
After the first round of entries for the 2008 Tornado World Championship closed, there were five British entries in a total of 32 competitors from 15 countries. Additional entries will be taken but will be subject to a late entry fee. Three crews have entered from New Zealand with a further five expected. The World Championship, being held in off Takapuna, New Zealand, will decide the final four places in the Multihull event at the 2008 Olympics, and for many this is where most of the interest in the regatta will be focussed. Only half of the qualified countries from the 2007 World Championships have entered so far at Takapuna, and it would seem that six countries will be competing for the four places available. The current World Champion, Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz (ESP) have entered, as has world 2, Carolijn Brouwer and Sebbe Godefroid (BEL), however the Bronze medalist from Cascais, Mitch Booth (NED) is not entered. Several of the fancied nations who missed qualification at the 2007 Worlds in August, notably Poland, Puerto Rico, Austria, Russia and Canada are competing. The eight New Zealand crews will also be trying to win a qualification place, after Aaron McIntosh and Mark Kennedy just missed by one position for the 2004 Olympics in Athens. They will be back again in 2008, and are amongst the three New Zealand crews already entered.
