Euromed Championships - Day 3

'Euromed Championships 2007, Malta'    Optimist

Day 3 of the Euromed Championships for Optimist and Lasers, held in Malta, brought very light wind once again. Boats had a long wait until the wind became steady enough to lay a course and hold just one race before it totally died and the rain set in.

The Optimist race was still a tough contest with Maltese Thomas Zammit Tabona coming in first. Russian Alexander Moskvichev of Russia and Ollie Cooper of Great Britain finished second and third respectively.

Benji Borg has been very consistent in the Laser class with a win in every race. Two races were held today with second and third placing, after Benji, going to two Italians Maura Mugavero and Maurizio Barbera in race 5. Race 6 brought a change in placing with Benji once again the winner followed by Christoph Podesta in second and Chiara Barbera of Italy in third place.

Following the fourth race overall positions have changed with title defender, Thomas Zammit Tabona, creeping up to an overall third. Russian national champion, Alexander Shelting, still holds his first position followed by his fellow compatriot Dmitry Tretiakov in second place.

The girls’ standings are very close with Malta’s Ella Fleri Soler and Nia Jones of Great Britain sharing top place as they remain on equal points. Young cadet Noya Baram, from Israel, lies in third place.

In the Cadet class the Russians are also leading whilst Maltese Edward Fleri Soler is holding an overall fourth.

Meanwhile weather forecasts for the rest of the week are looking more promising with moderate south easterly winds.
