Sail-World.com : Wright in fight back at SIRs Finn event

Wright in fight back at SIRs Finn event

Ed Wright came back into the reckoning at the Sydney International Regatta when he won race three of the Finn event, with great rival Ben Ainslie finishing fourth.

Originally scheduled for two races, the lone Finn race was sailed in light 6-8 knot shifty breezes on the Manly Circle near Sydney Heads. Race Officer Kevin Wilson was forced to abandon the first race attempt three quarters of the way through when, he says, 'an eight storey tanker split the fleet in two. It wasn’t fair on half the fleet, and I know some of the guys weren’t happy, but I had no alternative but to abandon the race.'

Eventually the Finns got away again, storms notwithstanding, and it was Wright who hit the finish line first, followed by 2007 world champion Rafael Trujillo (ESP), Jonas Hoegh Christensen (DEN), and then came Ainslie.

Overall, Ainslie still leads the series, just one point clear of the Dane, with a further five points to Trujillo and a third Brit, Giles Scott. Wright is currently in fifth place, 13 points adrift of his Olympic adversary.

The Aussies did not have a brilliant day; Anthony Nossiter was best placed in 11th for 10th overall, to overtake 15th placed Brendan Casey on the tally board by one place.

Wright and Ainslie are battling for the British Finn berth at the 2008 Olympics. Ainslie is the odds on favourite but Wright is determined to make him fight for the berth.

Four of the Brits racing in Sydney hold places in the top six overall, with Demark's Jonas Høgh-Christensen second and .
Spaniard third and Britains' Giles Scott fourth.
