Applications for entry in the 2006 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race Close this coming Friday afternoon at 5pm.!!

In the 414 nautical mile Hempel Gosford to Lord Howe race today Peter Goldsworthy, the skipper of the the winning boat Volvo 60 Getaway-sailing.com, used his satellite phone to ring the special race news phone number at Sail-World.com, the Australian and International Sailing news site. Standing on the deck, he recorded a graphic account of a very dramatic first night at sea.

Within five minutes of him hanging up the Sail-World reporting team received an email alerting them that the audio report was in the Sail-World online news database. Another two minutes later, the breaking news was on the Sail-World news site. Listen to the sat phone report now http://www.sail-world.com/multimedia/ACF2376.mp3?t=101156

Now sailors in the Hobart race, with no time to sit and type emails, can phone in an exciting voice report from a satellite phone at 4am from the middle of Bass Strait and one of the international Sail-World editors in the UK, Europe or New Zealand can listen to the news report and send it live; while the Sail-World Australia team is snatching 40 winks. Now we can receive SMS sent from the rail, or between windward leewards. Read the whole story below.
