'Dawn Monday morning near Queensland border - 2006 Sydney to Mooloolaba Race'    Quantum Sail Design Group ©

As the sun was thinking about rising over Lake Macquarie this morning, we were looking at images of the sun-rise a few minutes earlier near Byron Bay, taken from Ray Roberts Quantum Racing. I have to say it sent shivers down my spine.

In the early offshore races, communications were almost none existent. The fleet sailed over the horizon and the families went home to await a phone call a week or so later.

The most high tech efforts were in the Sydney to Hobart - race racing pigeons with times, dates and sextant produced latitudes and longitudes, were released to fly back with the latest news.

Then along came VHF and HF radio and racing skeds, then satellite tracking and now the Internet.

Following Sail-World you would have seen the Melbourne to Vanautu fleet was reporting by email over HF and email via Satellite. Now on the coast, the Sydney to Mooloolaba and Mackay race fleet navigators are Skyping their news and they are sending images by high speed broadband over phone.

Spend some time today and look back at the 40 or so pictures from eight photographers Sail-World has published on this race. Next week we will be delivering full screen images.

So you can have a look at the NEXT revolution, see XLR8 blitz the Mooloolaba start on video now at Web Sailing Video. http://smarketing.com.au/sailing_video/

Plenty of other news this week. Westernaustralia.com won the Clipper Round the World Race, we have great pixs from the International Moth Worlds, 100 boats at Skandia Cowes Week, Sail-World has lots of coverage. If you want even more go to www.sail-world.com/uk

This Thursday the Sydney International Boat Show starts and sharp eyes will see some of the new boats around. Last week Andrea Francolini was photographing the Marten 49 Cruiser from Azzura Marine (see story and pix’s below).

The Strictly Sailing stage will be well worth a visit this year. It takes place at the Boating Activity Stage in Hall 1 and will run daily from 2.00pm to 6.00pm. This is four hours of education and sailing tips for both the novice and experienced sailor on all things sailing.

Sailing Industry support for this year's Show is very strong; there will be acres of powerboats and lots of tinnies, just about every brand of Sailing boat you can think of will be in Darling Harbour and the hardware/electronics/charter/education groups will all be there too!

Make sure you get there by plane, ferry, monorail, train, car or foot.
