Editorial: Better late than never!

'Graham Dalton’s Open 50 awaits its rig in the Viaduct Harbour'    © Richard Gladwell
Welcome to the late Wednesday edition of Sail-World, sent to you on Thursday, due to technical issues.

Once again ABN Amro One has won a leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, with just a nine second margin in Wellington, standing between her and a clean sweep. Certainly it is a remarkable effort and begs comparison with Steinlager II in the 1989/90 Whitbread which took all six legs.

In Valencia the Acts for 2006 are about to get underway. These will be watched with very keen interest to see what happens to the team positions now that they are using new boats, to new designs and to the new rule rather than the four year old veterans that have been the prescribed kit to date. We have a great photo of the harbour at Valencia, to give you some idea of the layout of this new facility.

If you are passing the Viaduct basin take a look at Graham Dalton’s new Open 50, which is entered in the Velux 5 Oceans round the world single handed race. We have a photo feature on this Greg Elliott canting keeler and background the development of the boat named 'The Southern Man – AGD'. Her yellow hull should be a familiar sight on the Waitemata harbour over the next few weeks. We wish Graham well, and safe passage.

From England, we have a short photo-feature on the classic Merlin Rocket class – a boat few will have heard of in NZ, but the class is still sailing strongly in UK and proves the point about the longevity of classes which adapt and embrace advances in sailing technology. In the same vein we have our first reader’s letter seeking advice on what class he should consider as a double handed boat for his children as they leave the Optimist but are not up to the jump into the 420. Contributions are welcome and will be published unless otherwise stated.

On the subject of the 420, we have re-run the report on the 2006 Worlds Selection Trials with the Day 3 race report included (and our error corrected!).

At Sail-World we continue to develop and expand, and Managing Editor, Rob Kothe, brings us up to date with the latest developments.

Good Sailing
