'Start line of one of the Guernsey sea rowing events below Gorey Castle, Channel Islands'    Julie Duquemin
In this week’s Rowing-World we are certainly covering a lot ground, or should that be water?

We received some reaction to the Maadi Stats that were pasted last week, and are pleased to receive more. There will be another article on the effect of the progression system, first used at Maadi 2006, which will be featured in Rowing NZ's next magazine. Really the two sets of data need to be considered together to come to any real conclusions – however it is a big topic!

Also featured in this edition is a piece on the inaugural FISA Sea Rowing Championships which will be held off Guernsey in the Channel Islands. I’ve never rowed in Guernsey, but have sailed through there, and it is a very challenging place, history abounds and it will be a great event.

The Channel Islands are not too different from many parts of New Zealand – with a fantastic coastline – but not as good as the Hauraki Gulf, Bay of Islands and the Sounds. Maybe this is a sport that could be promoted, alongside fresh water rowing – a Hauraki Gulf Challenge, perhaps?

We have picked up a few stories about rowers and rowing, from around the world, including a couple from USA, and another from UK, illustrating that the issues about which some get very passionate about – are not just a Kiwi problem.

Coming up in the first week in June are a series of fundraising lunches, for our international rowers. I’m sure they would appreciate your support.

One of the ways the Olympic and international sailing competitors help themselves on Sail-World.com is by providing regular reports back on their results and how they performed in various regattas, good or no so great. They provide a useful offset to the PR machines, and help inspire up and coming sailors, or rowers.

We are always pleased to run these with full credit and recognition for their sponsors, and links to the competitor’s websites if they have one. Through Sail-World and Rowing-World we can drive a lot of readership to a competitor or club website – and this provides some real value for your sponsors and supporters. No longer do you have to fight for vital column space or TV news to get recognition for your club, event or moment of glory.

Your contributions, comments and letters are always welcome. Please send through to nzeditor@rowing-world.com

Good Rowing!
