America's Cup: Butterworth - 'I just thought that I could help.'

'Brad Butterworth, America's Cup tactician calls the shots on Wild Oats X'    Crosbie Lorimer

Four times America's Cup winner, Brad Butterworth appeared in a prime time news show interview in New Zealand to explain why he wanted to rejoin Team New Zealand.

Over the weekend it was disclosed that Butterworth had written to the new Board of Team New Zealand, offering to help in whatever way he could. That was later denied by one Board member, Sir Stephen Tindall, who said that Butterworth only wanted to be CEO.

Butterworth believes that Team New Zealand needs a shake-up, starting at the top.

'It's not about me. I just thought that I could help,' says Butterworth. 'That’s what I've said for the new board, that I have made myself available if they want to talk to me or if they wanted to consider changing people at the top of the tree.'

By the top of the tree, Butterworth means Dalton and the rest of the senior management.

'Dalton said himself that before the last cup, that if he didn’t win it this time then he was out and that he should let someone else have a go,' says Butterworth. 'Really it’s a matter of me saying that there are a lot of people that I know in the cup that say that I should get in there and try and help them.'

Butterworth says that he would love to help out and he has something to offer, and wanted to get involved.
The fact the board chose Dalton over Butterworth, he says he isn’t angry but surprised.

'I'm not pissed off, but I'm a little bit surprised that it's come about, because I would love to get involved,' says Butterworth. 'I'm a New Zealander, and of course I've sailed for New Zealand and I've won for New Zealand.'

Butterworth left Team New Zealand after the 2000 Cup Defence in New Zealand, along with Russell Coutts and four others of the NZL-60 crew. They signed up with the Swiss Alinghi campaign, returning to sail in the 2003 America's Cup in Auckland, winning 5-0 against a still decimated crew sailing a faulty boat. They successfully defended for Alinghi in Valencia, 5-2 against the Grant Dalton led Emirates Team NZ, with Dean Barker again on the helm. Coutts had a parting of ways with Ernesto Bertarelli and was replaced as helmsman with Ed Baird, Butterworth remained as tactician, along with the other Kiwis. He sailed as tactician for Ernesto Bertarelli, in Alinghi 5, the 120ft catamaran sailing in the 2010 Deed of Gift Match which lost 2-0 to Oracle Racing. He did not sail in the 2013 America's Cup in San Francisco.
