With the weather gods smiling, the ongoing Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, is sailing in moderate seas and north-easterlies around 10-knots. Early leaders have appeared: Australia, Japan, Russia and host country, Thailand, racking up multiple wins in their respective divisions of the 14 comprising the total fleets of more than 100 entries world-wide.
Top of the pile is Aussie Ray Roberts who has won almost every regatta in the Asian-Pacific region, at one time or another, including the Phuket King’s Cup and he has already racked up wins in the IRC Zero Class, the formula one of the sea lanes, edging out fellow-Aussie Peter Ahern.
Other leaders to emerge are: Singapore’s Bill Bremmer (IRC One Class), Japan’s Yasuo Nanamori (IRC –Two ),Hong Kong’s Anthony Root (IRC-Three), Thailand’s Ithinai Yingsiri (Premier Class), Japan’s Makiko Matsuishi (Sports Boat), Russia’s Nikolay Shkurin (Bareboat Charter), Russia’s Nikiforov Eugeny and Thailand’s Peter Kochnev (Open/Sunsail Charter), UK’s John Newnham (Firefly 850), Thailand’s Alan Carwadine (Multihull Racing), Japan’s NorikazuArai (Multihull Cruising), Thailand’s Jim Elis (Modern Classic), Thailand’s Peter Wood (Classic) and Aussie Chris Mitchell (Cruising).
Results of the dinghy was unavailable at press time.
With such large fleets, Race Director Simon James and Principal Race Officer, Ross Chisholm have a busy time whereas, the International Jury, chaired by international veteran Bryan Willis, is almost unemployed – an indication of the fairness and equality of the courses.
The regatta continues today and will be sailed right through to Friday, this year with no lay day.
