ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne: Lighter breezes for Day 2

Melbourne looks set to turn on a smorgasbord of breezes for the second day of the ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne 2013.

In the three locations monitored by Predictwind.com the forecasts are shown as being significantly different. That story is repeated in the general forecasting issued for the City.

Conditions off Sandringham are predicted to be much lighter than yesterday’s fresh hot northerly - that felt like a baker’s oven door had been opened. Today it is cooler with light winds and from a southerly direction.

Temperatures are predicted to be in the high teens today – a drop of almost 20 degrees from those which the sailors enjoyed yesterday. Fortunately the water was still cool and wet, providing some welcome relief.

The breeze is expected to stay around 9-12kts for most of the day, increasing slightly in the early evening. They will turn south around the start of racing today at noon and stay in that direction.

Off the coast of Sandringham and a little to the south of the regatta venue, it is a similar story, but with slightly stronger breezes in the 10-18kts range for the day.

At Melbourne Airport, to the north of Melbourne, and a little inland, winds and conditions are predicted – with a fresh northwesterly breeze, temperatures in the mid 30’s on today’s weather menu.

But real time observations point to lighter winds being recorded consistent in strength and direction to the predictions for Sandringham and Port Phillip. A cloud bank has rolled in which should hold the temperatures down.

Conditions on the water are expected to be very testing for the sailors – expect some roller-coaster results. All ten Olympic events will be sailing today, along with the two Paralympic classes and most of the Invited classes.

Racing first today will be Nacra 17, RSX men and women’s, Paralympic classes (SKUD 18 and 2.4M), Laser Radial Men, , Vipers

The second classes on the water will be the 470 Men & women and Finn, 49er and 49erFX, Laser, Laser Radial Women and Kiteboard Men & Women’s.

Tonight the completely sold out ISAF Sailing World Cup - Melbourne Dinner will be held at Sandringham Yacht Club.

Australia's America's cup sailors, Tom Slingsby (Oracle Team USA), Nathan Outteridge (Artemis Racing) and Glenn Ashby (Emirates Team New Zealand), will join a panel conducted by Andrew Plympton (Australian Olympic committee) to discuss the recent America's Cup.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Patron John Bertrand will talk to ISAF World Sailor of the Year 2013 Mat Belcher and his 470 crew Will Ryan.
